Django (BD-Design)

Has anybody out there assembled/have a Django or other Billings Stevens transf. volume control? I think I must have made a wiring error in the assembly. The system sounds cotton woolly with it in, and with it out, sounds fabulous. Luckily the output of the Twindac and TS SEOTL into the the MD3s gives just the right volume to be able take the Django out of the circuit. The output of the analogue is too great to judge, but that was also woolly and muffled with the Django in. Any ideas where to start looking for the mistake???

Hi Thomas,

Questions:

- Does it make any difference if you switch the +6dB on/off?
- Do you use the same type of interconnects on the in- and outputs?

I get the extra gain on the 6 db, but still it stays woolly. The earth selector does not seem to make much diff. Could I have messed up there? All volume settings work fine, but all sound are woolly. The piano sounds as if there were a piece of wool under each hammer!! All interconnects are Siltech 1000$US from the previous system.

Last questions to rule things out before digging in the Django...

- What is the input impedance of your main amplifer?
- Do you have zero resistance between the ground of all connected interconnects?
- any "filters" present in the interconnects or are these relative simple straight wires?

100K

Will check, BUT.. being non tech ..set meter to ohm and put probes on L and R ch. earths ???

Simple straight thru wires.

Yep, should measure 0 ohms (or close to ohms). Also measure in- and output chinch of the left and next the same on the other channel.

Got something Bert. Inputs all 3 are 0 0 0
Output 1.6K ohms.
So what do I do next??
Thanks

Hi Tom,

If you measure 1.6kohm between the RCA input and output grounds then you have a floating ground. There is a switch where you can select some ground options and one of these is "floating". In some systems this sounds better (depending on the listener though...)

I would check the switch or by-pass that switch making direct connections between the RCA grounds.

Bingo!! Thanks Bert. Wow, what magic at O ohms for ALL the earths. Guess the switch may have been faulty or the wiring tricked me.

Will send in report soon, now that I have MUSIC!!

Thanks again

Tom
