Bass amp - again! (BD-Design)
Bert et al,
I'm still looking for a bass amp for my Orphean Compact Ref bass bins (which, by the way, are fantastic!)
I have tried an ICE amp (Bel Canto). Not bad at all, perhaps I should have kept it, but I find the midbass very 'dry' with ICE amps.
Am now using a Rogue 88 KT88 tube amp. 60W ultralinear. Pretty good too, but it has some noise! It seems it is not made for 100 dB speakers.
I am now eyeing some 'vintage' class A solid-state amps like Threshold and Forte.
The Forte Model 4 is 50W into 8 ohms - so probably 25W into 16. Is that enough power?? Would this be a good choice?
If not that, the Threshold 400A is 100W into 8 ohms, 50W into 16. I could go that route but only want to if the extra power is really beneficial. I don't listen too loudly - 95 dB peaks - but my room is very large.
Thanks!

Hello Paul!
I have NAIM's NAP 135 monobloks for sale. They are doing their job pretty good, but I will go full BD-design (this include BD30). I am selling Naims for 400 Euro plus shipping.

Gasper,
I may be interested in those 135's. is the price for both or per amp.?
Can you tell me how you go about hooking them into a non-Naim system, as I believe there can be some issues with stability.
Also - have you been using them with Naim speaker cable? I believe this is regarded as essential for achieving suitable capacitive loading.
Cheers,
Russell

Gasper,

Yes the price is for two monobloks together. They are (pair) copy according to original plans and it is the same as original just withouth the fan on back side. I would like to sell them because I will order BD30 in October.

I have no probems - I am using them just for bass and it is no problem.
Also - have you been using them with Naim speaker cable?
Yes, but with an old BD-Compact bass and Beyma's (15G350) - I have buy used cables. I know that the best results are with original cable. But I have sold cables with old bass system Compact/Beyma.
Cheers,
Russell

Hi Gasper,
Can you tell me a little more? Where are the PCB's from - are they perhaps Avondale Audio?

Bass amp - again!
First apology to Paul for going off-topic. Sorry.
Second: Sorry Russell for slow reply but I was "out of town".
I have to contact a fiend who made this amps. He is specialist in repairing TaNoy's (old drivers), Naim's, turntables (Linn, Thorens,...), etc. He told me that PCB's are from Neil McBride (http://www.neilmcbride.co.uk/). He also used some special square cables inside (no air gap between cables) and all components are best quality. Also housing is very nice and painted in mat-black with some structure. Real nice. The amps are in mint condition.
I hope you get what you ask if not please do not hesitate to conatct me.

Hi Gasper,
Thanks for the extra information. I've decided that the amps are not quite what I'm looking for. Still, I'm sure they are excellent and at €400 are a bargain for somebody.
Cheers,
Russell
