bass filter for 150 Compact (Oris Horns)

by Tom Russell @, Tuesday, February 13, 2007, 12:36 (6254 days ago)

Bert

I am using a 150 horn, AER2 driver, and Compact Reference bass cabs. I have been using a Rane active crossover for my low pass filter. I use amps that are designed to drive the 150s with no filter. The one low pass filter per bass cab is all there is. I want to try a passive filter. I can't run it off of the main amp as the amp gives no bass frequencies. I would Y the line level signal, with one leg going to the 150 amp and the other leg going to the filter and then to the bass amps. Do you have a suggestion as to the values I might use?

Thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

going to the filter and then to the bass amps. Do you have a suggestion as
to the values I might use?

The gain for the bass will be too low if you are thinking of a passive line filter. You'll need an extra stage to boost the gain with minimal 12dB...

Can you use the active filter as a kind of pre-amp only?

Using passive components in between the bass amplifier and the bass driver will be a problem unless you EQ the impedance peaks and rise first. That will become a complex filter and you'll need to be able to measure what you are doing. I do not use the same bass drivers as you are doing now...

Its hard to suggest the optimal thing from a distance for systems I do not have around here to check for suitability...

Ciao,

Bert

I made a filter following your values for a Compact - 1.3k/1.5uf, 3k/150nf, 100k pot - although I'm not sure if this is for a 150 or a 200. There seems to be plenty of gain. The subjective proper volume balance between the horn and the bass is about a quarter to a third of the rotation of a linear 100k pot. Full open is way too loud.

Can you use the active filter as a kind of pre-amp only?

Yes but one of the main things I am trying to accomplish here is the elimination of an active stage and the noise that accompanies it. I am determined to make this system silent.

I have not considered placing the filter between the amp and the driver. I use the BD15 drivers that were sold last year.

It is an Oris 150 Compact system. There are several suggested filters that I found searching the forum but none appear to be designed for a line level application and I'm not sure that I found a filter that was designed for a 150. I'm hoping you can suggest some basic filter values to work from.

Sorry, I thought you were using an Altec 416?

When you click on Reply to answer a message then you should click on the Quote button. The original message should then appear in the editing screen.

Have you found some new interesting bassdrivers to replace bd15?

No, why do you ask?

I do have new BD15's to replace the used ones though but these will be the same after they break in....

Double bd 15 in custom designed ventilated 320 liters "matrix"cabinets made especially by Bert to match Avantgarde Trio.Bert got a picture or two.
Picked them up in Nunspeet.
Managed to squeeze them into an Audio A6!
Not playing as deep as the originals, but in another league when it comes to quality!
Low pass at appprox.95hZ "dual slope" line level passive x/o

Øhh...what is that nice little horn on the floor left to the bass towers? Some new project of yours.

Remember to use airpreassure for those types. A D-amp wouldn't go here

how is difference to original woofers ?

by angeloitacare, Thursday, February 15, 2007, 12:25 (6252 days ago) @ leifchristensen

hi Leif

the originals you had from Avantgarde where with Beyma 12"s ? can you describe better the quality differences to your bd15's? i heard the duo's recently, with Avantgarde's double 12" beyma drivers, i liked them a lot. Go deep, fullbodied sound, but not so fast.

thanks Angelo

no I had CTRL225PRO with dual 10inchers from?
the BD 15 is faster, more detailed, more air.better differentiation of bass lines.louder with substancially more midbass slam.
my room is the eq of approx 250cubicmeters and the originals bottomed when passing 100db in listening pos.3,5 meters away.
they also integrate far better, some people claim perfectly!
obviously this is also due to the excellent bd30chipamp and passiv X/O WITHOUT
EQ.!!
the only thing I miss at certain passages is the extreme lowend below 35.
If I had the space (and money)I´d by the custom basshorns for sale on Audiogon right now and match them with the large GOTO 160 bass drivers.
