Logout problem tackled? (Forum)

by Bert @, Monday, January 08, 2007, 23:41 (6289 days ago)

Hi All,

I just updates the forum with modified files by Cappy. The update worked well but if you won't be logged out is another thing to know.

It should be okay for 2 hours now, that should be long enough to edit a message eh!

If you are logged out for some reason within 2 hours then please let me know...

Thanks Cappy!

Time for the nex issue.... when done then....

...I already have another one that is not on the list: :shame:

In the database all messages have a number. When a user is linking to another message then it depends in which view he is making a copy of that message. If he is looking at board view than the message he copies is called: index?number.

If somebody is reading the forum in thread view then such a link will bring him to board view without asking...?

Would it be possible that the forum only writes the number of the message and that it stays in the preferred view of the user when he clicks on it?

Logout problem tackled?

by Cappy @, Tuesday, January 09, 2007, 01:35 (6289 days ago) @ Bert

I'm seeing intermittent problems getting into the forum with my change, sorry everyone...

My software change now creates a new directory on the host; it may be running out of space. In any case Bert and I will have to debug this in the morning Europe time.

Ehh, GC, what do you see or notice ?
I don't see a difference ?
Or did you talk about the 2 hours login time ?

Logout is NOT tackled

Yes I did.

GC

Ah ...
Yes, that WOULD be good. But I'm afraid it doesn't work.

I left a Reply open for 65 minutes, of which 35 I didn't touch any other BD-Forum area as well (thus, the first 30 minutes I was browsing other topics).
Now, I'm logged off again.

If that was the effective message of Cappy earlier, then I excuse myself to have posted this.

(edit : see post below)

Bert, allow me to answer this question :

Theoretically yes, practically no.
There will be too much involved, because such links are all over the place hence *everywhere* in the software. It's just a design "error".

Peter

PS: An approach would be rerouting of the URLs, that is, if the webserver software would be under your control (which it is not).

No, wrong I think ...

The PHP pages like index.php could start with and IF for the user settings accordingly. If that's "threaded", it should redirect to forum-entry.php (with all the parameters).
And the other way around.

Problem might be that threaded links have more parameters (starting at &page). But if you leave them out in the redirection, it works just the same.

Oh well.

Logout problem tackled?

by Bert @, Tuesday, January 09, 2007, 10:38 (6289 days ago) @ PeterSt.

Hi Peter,

Checking for the last time before going to bed yesterday (1:00am) I noticed that the forum was down and only showed error messages. So, I replaced the "new" board for the old one which is running now.

I guess the host ran out of space but it did work pretty well for some time.

Oh well, we'll figure it out!

Hi Peter,

Yep. I was still logged in after 40 minutes or so.

I started answering this message at: 15:05 but will wait some time before posting it...

I have posted this message at: 15:58

Done nothing with the forum in between.... so the logout problem seems to solved.

Now the other issue related to last night..., I have moved the forum to the new version again and try to follow what is happening until it breaks down again... (if it does).

Ciao,

Bert

Hi Peter,

There will be too much involved, because such links are all over the place hence *everywhere* in the software. It's just a design "error".

All the links can be "edited" within the database by removing "index" and "index" or replace the link name for something else.

A computer and a text editor can do that pretty quick (one command and all links are renamed).

The forum is only reading its information from the database...

I will do a simple test.

This is the posted link twice:

http://www.bd-design.nl/forum/index.php?id=12084

http://www.bd-design.nl/forum/index.php?id=12084

I will change the top one to index.php through the database...

Hi Bert,

Don't want to interfere too much, but I don't see what you did. I mean, both links you provided already contained the respective data (in the link itself). I think (so, not sure) that for your test you should have put

http://www.bd-design.nl/forum/index.php?id=12084

http://www.bd-design.nl/forum/index.php?id=12084

hence twice the same, but both responding differently.
Ehh ... no, which can't be done.

Ok, so I just don't understand.
Never mind.

Both links were the same before I changed the top one in the database, that is why they are not the same anymore...

BTW, I just remaned all (old) links called index to index (except within this thread).

I can even rename you to Spartacus so that all your old posts will show your new name as author...

Ah ...
And are you going to do that every night now ?

Anyway, I didn't think this would be your solution ...
So instead of you getting into a board view I referred to, now I get into a thread view you referred to ...
:cry::

Hi Peter,

Anyway, I didn't think this would be your solution ...

No, it isn't but if the forum itself would not use "forum_" and "board_" as prefix then it is only a one time job to change the old links to the new standard.

So instead of you getting into a board view I referred to, now I get into a thread view you referred to ...

No problem, then use the back button after you have read the followed link provided (or open it in a new window).

Logout problem tackled?

Thank you very much. Just typed for 30 minutes or so on a rather delicated post (in http://forum.bd-design.nl/index.php?id=12338) and stupidly pressed Preview without copying the data first. Won't type that again ...

Didn't encounter this from off this thread told the problem was solved.
But tonight it was there again once more.
Can't tell whether it was just over or just under 30 minutes (but near anyway), not if it is related to the old problem.

Dang.

Hi Peter,

After starting a post I didn't touch the forum for 5 hours or so.
At the Preview attempt this 5 hours later, I was logged out ...

That is because the time is limited to 2 hours (this usually gives you 2-3 hours time to do something before you're logged out).
