Quasar MKII with Altec 604 Driver? (BD-Design)

by souldriver @, Sunday, May 14, 2006, 10:25 (6560 days ago)

Hi

I am new here and i wanted to know if the Quasar MkII speaker design could work with Altec 604 (in fact it is an new iconic 704 driver)drivers to? For shure there will be only 1 driver than 3 in the original quasar concept. The sensivity of this driver is aNounced with 100db which is quit enough and it is built as a coaxial full range speaker.

i would be pleased to get some opinions or ideas!

Thanks a lot

That won't work, you'll need an extra bass driver to get some decent bass from the open panel.

Quasar MKII with Altec 604 Driver?

Hi Urs,

Could the BD 15 be option?

Sure but do not ask about the tuning of it all. You'll need to "boost" the bass driver for more output in the deeper bass (EQ the cancelling due to the open panel).

Hi Urs,

You can continue with the project but I have no idea what the performance will be, simply because I never used the driver in an open panel.

You could try to make a simple panel and mount the Altec in there to see what it brings. From there you can always go further if you like what you hear or find another solution.

An open panel has one major disadvantage, the bass is cancelled out due to the open construction. The smaller the baffle the less deeper bass you'll have which needs to be EQ-ed to get some back. Just the Altec in an open panel will not give any bass, better would be to use such a driver in an Onken Reflex enclosure so that there is no need for extra bass drivers, amplifiers and filters to get it to work together.

Ciao,

Bert
