Center Speaker for Oris 150 + Khorn (BD-Design)

by mmwolf @, Friday, April 07, 2006, 18:08 (6596 days ago)

Many greetings from germany

A little background info:
At the end of last year i bought a pair of oris 150.
I wanted to use them with a Fostex FE 204 (older brother
of FE206E with flatter response), a Fostex T725 Supertweeter
and a khorn bass bin with the original K33E bass in it.
The xo for oris and khorns is a dynacord DSP 224 (time alignment,
eq, xo with many filter charakteristics).

After some testing and tuning (i got many helpful hints out of
this forum :good: ) the only thing i can say is:

W O W !! :yahoo:

Thank you Bert !! You already heard this from many users of your
horns but now i am really listening to music and not loudspeakers !!
The sound at high levels, imaging and dynamics are stunning (for me) !!
My old loudspeaker-system was not able to sound like this even after
some complicated and expensive optimizing.
I just love the sound and the simplicity of my oris-system.

Now i want to upgrade my oris system for homecinema use.
Would the Oris 200 be a good choice for a center speaker-system ?
(filled with another FE204, a Fostex T825 Supertweeter and a closed
bassbox with a RCF L15P200/AK, active xo)
Or would it be sufficient to use a closed box for the fullrangedriver
in the same combination ?

Many thanks in advance

Markus Maier

Center Speaker for Oris 150 + Khorn

Hi Markus
Not exactly your system, but in my previous house I was able to use my Hedlund horns as part of the Home Theatre set up. The imaging was so good that I was able to do away with the centre speaker.

You could try this by programming the HT amplifier/processor to operate without the centre channel. The centre signal is then shared left and right.

One reason I did this was to avoid having powerful magnets centred near the TV screen.

Might be worth a go.

Good luck
Chris

Hi Markus,

Now i want to upgrade my oris system for homecinema use.
Would the Oris 200 be a good choice for a center speaker-system ?

If you can wait for a short while then perhaps the Oris 250 would be a better option? This horn gives more freedom to the sound compared to the Oris 150 or Oris 200.

Or would it be sufficient to use a closed box for the fullrangedriver
in the same combination ?

No, that will not work. Either use something similar or very close to the sound characteristics of the main left and right channels or use no center channel at all (as suggested by Chris).

I am not using a center channel either and have the processor the center channel mixed into the left and rigth channel. With the stereo Oris horns the dialog is now coming from the center too (optimal listening palce in the center though).

Ciao,

Bert

Center Speaker for Oris 150 + Khorn

by mmwolf @, Saturday, April 08, 2006, 21:06 (6595 days ago) @ Bert

Hi Chris, Hi Bert,

thank you both for your quick answers.
I also was thinking about running my homecinema installation
without any center speaker because of the very good imaging of
the oris horns. For me alone this would be more than sufficient.
But from time to time i will invite some friends for viewing
films and therefore i want to use a center channel.

@Bert: Surely i can wait a short while. If the Oris 250 will be the
solution for my problem than it is welcome.
What will be the main differences in sound compared to the Oris 150 and
Oris 200 ?
More freedom means a larger sweetspot ?
Can you say something about the outer dimensions of the Oris 250
(or is this top secret :secret: ) ?

Again many thanks in advance !!

Markus Maier

P.S.: Now i'm going to listen to some nice music........

Yes, and the music less coming from the horns. They do have less "body" though so the quality of the bass should be very good to keep up with these horns.

Can you say something about the outer dimensions of the Oris 250
(or is this top secret :secret: ) ?

Its 54cm in diameter and will be about 45-55cm deep including back chamber for 8" drivers.

ciao,

Bert

Center Speaker for Oris 150 + Khorn

Hello Bert,

it seems that the oris 250 is worth waiting for it  .

To keep up with the oris 250 and the main speakers i plan
to use two 15"-bass-speakers in separate closed cabinets.
With this combination there hopefully will be enough "body"
to support the oris 250 for the rest. Because of the closed
cabinets i think the bass will also be "fast" enough.
Added with a supertweeter this system will play between 80Hz and
20kHz. Deep enough for a center speaker and a perfect match
for the Oris 150 and Khorns i think.

What do you think of this combination ?
Will two 15"-bass-speakers in closed boxes be a good support for
the Oris 250 ?

best wishes

Markus

Hi Markus,

the Oris 250 ?

I think that even with two quality 10" drivers that this will do the job and within the Oris 250 a suitable drive unit going up to 12-15kHz you do not need a tweeter either.

Hi Bert,

perhaps two 15" drivers seem to be a little bit too excessive.
But i already have them (RCF L15P200/AK) and want to use them.
In a 40l closed bass box they will reach appr. 70 Hz.
I want to use closed boxes instead of bassreflex because
in my opinion they will better blend with my Oris / khorn speakers.
All bassreflex boxes i tried to combine with my old Khorn-System
didn't blend very well. With closed box systems it was much better.
Two 15" drivers are excessive i know but they will be fast and efficient
enough to keep up with the khorn bass bins.
Please correct me if i am thinking in the wrong direction !!:this:

For the center Oris i want to use the same Fostex FE204 i use for
the Oris 150 on the Khorns. This will give a perfect match i think.
I tried my Oris 150 with and without supertweeter and without the
supertweeter there was something missing.
Perhaps with the Oris 250 in front of the driver there will be no need
for a supertweeter. It would be worth a try.

Bert thank you for your help and tips.
Compared to the problems and flops i had with my old khorn combination
(not to mention all of the drivers and the equipment i bought to make
it sound right) the fine tuning of my oris horns is a lot of fun.
And it costs a lot of time  ....... because i find myself listening
to the music for a while everytime i just wanted to test something new.

many thanks and best wishes

Markus

Hi Markus,

Please correct me if i am thinking in the wrong direction !!:this:

It will be more than okay...

Bert thank you for your help and tips.

No need to thank me, my pleasure to help out other people in their search for optimal sound. However, you could send some pictures for my showroom though...

....... because i find myself listening to the music for a while everytime i just wanted to test something new.

That is what all is about. Enjoy!
