...do with baffle thickness: do the multiple layers effect dispersion of the rear wave?

The multiple layers create a sort of tube making the "width" of the baffle a bit wider without negative influence on the bass when you cross around 250-300Hz. The mid-range is more effected which is helping low Q drivers but might disturb high Q drivers. If that is the case then you should apply damping material behind that driver.
